Last evening, I was happy to capture the setting red sun entwined in the branches of the oak tree just beyond my window, ending the day as I begin, with my heart in the sky and the beautiful promises of Nature.

Each morning, with the first rays of dawn, the air becomes alive with the harmonious melodies sung by the birds perched upon the oak's branches, announcing the beginning of a new day.

Inspired by the birds' songs and the essence of love, my heart resonates with the profound beauty of Hafiz's quote and the bird's response. Shall I be weighed down by the gravity of external challenges and internal struggles, or shall I rise above, propelled by the power of love?

As the birds serenade me, I am reminded that love acts as my guiding light, lifting me beyond the limitations around me. With a heart overflowing with hope, joy, and an unwavering sense of purpose, I am ready to confront adversity and soar to even greater heights.

I hope our lives serve as living testaments to the transformative power of love, harmonizing with the melodies sung by the birds at dawn. As we navigate the ever-changing currents of life, may we shine as beacons of inspiration, guided by love.

In my photo of the sunset, a straight beam of vibrant orange light extends from the sun, reaching out towards the clouds and gently caressing the earth. In this moment, the sun becomes a bridge connecting the boundless sky with the grounding presence of the land.

Time stands still as I take a deep breath, allowing the resounding grace of the merging sky, light, and earth to resonate within my own "listening heart." With each exhale, a profound sense of tranquility fills me.

On my way home from work today, the clouds blessed the sky with exquisite beauty, evoking an exhilarating rhythm within my chest and leaving me breathless. Overwhelmed by the desire for more, I paused at Vulcan Park to seize this photo of the clouds dancing with the afternoon Birmingham skyline.

I was saddened by the news of singer Tina Turner’s death. She was a role model of courage, enthusiasm, and resilience! With her captivating style, she achieved success by breaking free from the things that oppressed her and pursuing her true self, purpose, and potential.

What a powerhouse voice, amazing dance moves, and mesmerizing performer! 

"When you are free," she said. I will always remember her version of Proud Mary, an epic funk tribute to freedom. Her self-empowering spirit sparks creativity and inspires us to stay true to and discover our heartfelt desires.

Philosopher and prolific writer Bertrand Russell (1872-1970) believed that happiness is a by-product of two qualities: love and knowledge.

The power of love inspires kindness, compassion, and the enthusiastic pursuit of passion. Love gives meaning to life and helps us find satisfaction in our relationships and accomplishments.

What is love? The answer is not always easy to find or explain, but love starts by digging deep, opening your heart, and giving. When someone struggles, take the time to notice, listen, and offer words of encouragement. Love is heart-driven and best when unconditional. You can volunteer your time, forgive someone who has hurt you, or simply choose to be kind.

However, love alone is not enough. You also need knowledge to practice critical thinking, guide and question, make wise choices, solve problems, and better understand the world. Take the time to evaluate and test your beliefs. Knowledge enables informed decisions and fosters great discoveries.

What is knowledge? Knowledge is about finding new ideas and innovative products, providing services that benefit society, staying up-to-date with the latest developments, and sharing knowledge with others through teaching or mentoring-- using your values and gifts.

Russell once said, "Nothing is so exhausting as indecision" when it comes to stepping up to life and learning all that you can in your quest for knowledge.

When we combine love and knowledge, we create a good life, full of joy, fulfillment, and purpose. So, remember that love and knowledge are both essential ingredients for a happy and meaningful life. May you always strive to cultivate both in your life.

Growth and Self-Transformation

As I drive towards Muscle Shoals early on a Saturday morning, it takes me two hours to reach Kayla's new home. I'm currently on the University of North Alabama Highway (157), near Battle Ground. The heavy rain and tornado warnings from last night have cleared up, and the morning sky is now a beautiful array of colors and emotions, like a visual palette.

Kayla's recent promotion fills me with pride, but I'm still adjusting to her move. As I gaze at the open road ahead, I realize that it's up to me to work through these changes and losses for "growth and self-transformation."

As I keep driving, a sense of gratitude fills my heart, and I whisper to myself, "I'll be okay. It's good to be alive." The road and sky inspire me, and I plan to capture them in a watercolor painting. Though I'm alone, the vast sky feels like my companion, keeping me company on this new journey.

Deep Understanding And Love

Thich Nhat Hanh's quote emphasizes the importance of deep understanding and love in our lives. It reminds us that even in the brief moments of reflection, we can feel blessed by the love that surrounds us.

Life's transitions can be challenging, and sudden changes like Kayla's move can be especially difficult to navigate. However, by cultivating self-awareness and empathy towards others, we can develop acceptance and compassion, and let go with love to move forward.

Love has the power to bring happiness, peace, and wholeness into our lives. Although healing from emotional or psychological wounds requires effort, we can work towards nurturing our inner strength and powerful emotions to achieve growth and healing.

Remember that we all possess the strength and resilience to overcome the difficulties that come our way. As Thich Nhat Hanh reminds us, we can take a moment to be grateful for our hearts and the power of love that can guide us towards healing and well-being.

As Hanh also said, "Breathing in, I am aware of my heart. Breathing out, I smile to my heart and know that my heart still functions normally. I feel grateful for my heart."

The Right Use of Strength

Strength goes beyond physical power. It is about utilizing all our abilities, whether physical, mental, or emotional, for the benefit of others. It includes standing up for ourselves and others, taking on challenges, and pursuing our passions with purpose. True greatness lies in the right use of strength, which is to make a positive impact on the world around us.

This photograph captures the 56-foot-high Vulcan statue atop Red Mountain in Birmingham, Alabama. The Vulcan is the largest cast iron statue in the world and was created by Italian sculptor Giuseppe Moretti for the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis. The statue represents the Roman god of fire and metalworking, symbolizing Birmingham's origins in the iron and steel industry.

The statue stands just a few blocks from my apartment and I see it every day. With his spear pointed towards the sky, the Vulcan reminds me of my inner strength and resilience. The sight of the statue inspires me, and its presence reminds me that I am close to home.

In the midst of a long day at work, it can be easy to forget the beauty that surrounds us. But yesterday, as I stepped out of my car and looked up at the sky, I was filled with wonder and awe. The vibrant colors of the downtown Birmingham sunset took my breath away, and I couldn't resist capturing the moment with my camera.

As I settle into my home now, the beauty of the sky and the wisdom of Carl Sagan's words still resonate with me. The quote "We are made of star-stuff" serves as a reminder that we are part of something greater than ourselves, connected to the vast universe around us. This helps put the challenges of the day into perspective, and reminds me to be grateful for the gift of life.

Despite the difficulties we may face, the sky is a constant source of inspiration and hope. Looking up reminds us that tomorrow is another chance to shine, and that we have the power to make a positive impact on the world around us.

Poor Translation

...Opening a private part of my life to him, we are watching the sunset together and I am shooting into the sun, something I have done hundreds of times, with creative success, over the past 20 years.

"Your photo will be overexposed," he said. His only words.

Perhaps he is right.

But does he even know me?

Smile. Keep shooting.

Into the sun...

This Rumi quote suggests that sometimes words aren't necessary or helpful, and that silence can be a powerful tool for understanding and connection with a higher power. In life, there are no guarantees that everyone will understand or appreciate who we are, and it's okay to let go of those people and embrace our authentic selves.

In the end, the Rumi quote serves as a beautiful reminder of the possibilities that come with silence and the importance of being true to oneself, even in the face of unsolicited advice or criticism.

In this photo I captured the Birmingham, Alabama skyline, which illustrates an interesting contrast between clarity and haze. Similarly, during times of confusion, seeking inner silence and stillness can be instrumental in accessing profound wisdom and intuitive insights. 

The concept of "obvious guidance" can be interpreted as those intuitive nudges, hunches, or subtle inner promptings that arise when the mind is calm and open.
