Like Clouds In The Windy Sky

Birmingham, Alabama

A good day, planting seeds. Arriving home yesterday, I stepped out of my car in the parking lot and looked toward the late afternoon skyline. From this vantage point on one of Birmingham’s few mountains, the view is clear all the way to downtown and the horizon. The sky stretched wide in a breathtaking blue, billowy clouds drifting with effortless lightness. Just outside my window, the oak tree still stands bare, waiting patiently for spring. Below it, the three-story apartment building—the one I glance at in the quiet hours of morning and evening—was getting a new roof. A renewal in progress.

Earlier in the day, I planted flower seeds with the residents, tucking small promises into the soil, trusting the unseen work of growth. A roof being rebuilt, seeds being sown—both reminders that change happens quietly before it blooms.

I’m reminded of zen master Thích Nhất Hạnh’s words: "Feelings come and go like clouds in a windy sky. Conscious breathing is my anchor." By becoming the observer of my emotions, I root myself in beautiful stillness—an unmovable force amid life’s ever-changing landscape.

The Good Life

Muscle Shoals, Alabama
"The good life is one inspired by love and guided by knowledge."
Bertrand Russell

Philosopher and prolific writer Bertrand Russell (1872-1970) believed that happiness is a by-product of two qualities: love and knowledge.

The power of love inspires kindness, compassion, and the enthusiastic pursuit of passion. Love gives meaning to life and helps us find satisfaction in our relationships and accomplishments.

What is love? The answer is not always easy to find or explain, but love starts by digging deep, opening your heart, and giving. When someone struggles, take the time to notice, listen, and offer words of encouragement. Love is heart-driven and best when unconditional. You can volunteer your time, forgive someone who has hurt you, or simply choose to be kind.

However, love alone is not enough. You also need knowledge to practice critical thinking, guide and question, make wise choices, solve problems, and better understand the world. Take the time to evaluate and test your beliefs. Knowledge enables informed decisions and fosters great discoveries.

What is knowledge? Knowledge is about finding new ideas and innovative products, providing services that benefit society, staying up-to-date with the latest developments, and sharing knowledge with others through teaching or mentoring-- using your values and gifts.

Russell once said, "Nothing is so exhausting as indecision" when it comes to stepping up to life and learning all that you can in your quest for knowledge.

When we combine love and knowledge, we create a good life, full of joy, fulfillment, and purpose. So, remember that love and knowledge are both essential ingredients for a happy and meaningful life. May you always strive to cultivate both in your life.

The Right Use of Strength

Vulcan Park, Birmingham, Alabama

"Greatness lies not in being strong,
but in the right use of strength."
Henry Ward Beecher

Strength goes beyond physical power. It is about utilizing all our abilities, whether physical, mental, or emotional, for the benefit of others. It includes standing up for ourselves and others, taking on challenges, and pursuing our passions with purpose. True greatness lies in the right use of strength, which is to make a positive impact on the world around us.

This photograph captures the 56-foot-high Vulcan statue atop Red Mountain in Birmingham, Alabama. The Vulcan is the largest cast iron statue in the world and was created by Italian sculptor Giuseppe Moretti for the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis. The statue represents the Roman god of fire and metalworking, symbolizing Birmingham's origins in the iron and steel industry.

The statue stands just a few blocks from my apartment and I see it every day. With his spear pointed towards the sky, the Vulcan reminds me of my inner strength and resilience. The sight of the statue inspires me, and its presence reminds me that I am close to home.

Starstuff

 Birmingham, Alabama

"The nitrogen in our DNA, the calcium in our teeth, the iron in our blood, the carbon in our apple pies were made in the interiors of collapsing stars. We are made of starstuff."
Carl Sagan

In the midst of a long day at work, it can be easy to forget the beauty that surrounds us. But yesterday, as I stepped out of my car and looked up at the sky, I was filled with wonder and awe. The vibrant colors of the downtown Birmingham sunset took my breath away, and I couldn't resist capturing the moment with my camera.

As I settle into my home now, the beauty of the sky and the wisdom of Carl Sagan's words still resonate with me. The quote "We are made of star-stuff" serves as a reminder that we are part of something greater than ourselves, connected to the vast universe around us. This helps put the challenges of the day into perspective, and reminds me to be grateful for the gift of life.

Despite the difficulties we may face, the sky is a constant source of inspiration and hope. Looking up reminds us that tomorrow is another chance to shine, and that we have the power to make a positive impact on the world around us.

To Give It Sweetness?

Center Point, Alabama

"What good is the warmth of summer
without the cold of winter to give it sweetness?"
John Steinbeck

In winter, the sky is a vibrant feast. I love the freedom of looking up, across the horizon and watching the sky. Ah, my heart leaps at the sweetness of time standing still. The colors change, the clouds twirl, my spirit takes wing, soaring, and I am one with the sky.

That is my secret: I watch the sky with an open heart and the sweetness of life rises.

Body, Soul, Mind, Spirit

Birmingham, Alabama

"If a man is to live, he must be all alive,
 body, soul, mind, heart, spirit."
Thomas Merton

On the balcony, I am treated to the chilly January sky, ringed by strong winter trees and the lingering glitter of festive holiday lights. I am feeling alive, body, soul, mind, heart, and spirit. (Thank you, Thomas Merton for the inspiration.)

Good Morning from Birmingham, Alabama, and hello 2022!

What Your Thoughts Make It

"Your life is what your thoughts make it."
Marcus Aurelius

I have the sliding door open so I can listen to what's happening outside. The air is warm, the sounds are rich. I am enjoying the bird songs and flight and that jumping squirrel just to the right.

I am living my dream, with strength and possibilities again inspired by the tree's marrow, and the hypnotic overcast sky on this beautiful new morning.

With reflection and prayers comes this simple, glorious fact: I am at my best when I am connected to Nature and motivated by love.

The Power of Gratitude

"The power of gratitude can be delivered in the smallest of moments."
Vivek Murthy

Hot summer days in Birmingham, Alabama and I continue to be enchanted by the sky and clouds. And of course, I find the shape of hearts formed by the sky. I discover joy when I look up.

and eventually in one's own."

Joining Heaven and Earth

"Joining heaven and earth is not separating
this and that, but making them indivisible."

Create Again and Again

listening to the birds outside my balcony this morning. Their oak tree song fills me with hope and peace.
Five Points South, Birmingham, Alabama

"Curving back within myself I create again and again."
 (Sanskrit: prakṛtim svām avastabhya
visrjami punaḥ punaḥ)
the Bhagavad Gita

Saturday Morning and I am again listening to the birds outside my balcony this morning. Their oak tree song fills me with hope and peace. I have just finished sharing Aloha with text messages to my friends and on Twitter, reminding myself that today, no matter what the challenges that come, I will try to keep this beauty I feel alive with connection and kindness.

I am heading to work shortly and our Alabama Nursing Home is still Covid19-free. We are working hard to keep it this way.

See the Moon

"Glance at the sun.
See the moon and stars.
Gaze at the beauty of the green earth.
Now think."
Hildegard of Bingen

An unexpected distraction,
A skylight surprise.
Two days from being full:
this moon, setting golden to orange,
cutting the indigo over the city of Birmingham, Alabama.

Something about the moon that welcomes dreams...
